The Details
This, the first of three superb candles created by the apothecary team of Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz, receives high marks. They work out of their small chandlery in Brooklyn, New York.
It’s just called “Tobacco.” The reason will become very apparent when you light it up. The candle gives off a masculine vanilla smell with subtle sweet pipe tobacco as an undertone.
A reviewer says the scent fills his entire home, and is “earthy and natural.”
We found it to be full-bodied and profound, enveloping the senses in every way. Well worth the pricey expenditure.
Here is how Malin + Goetz describe their creation:
“Our comforting tobacco candle lights up a room with its smooth, smoky, velvety aroma. Top notes of basil and rye. Middle notes of chestnut honey and ylang ylang. There are also base notes of tobacco leaves, guaiacwood, and bourbon vanilla. These unite to create a rich, powerful, long lasting scent that completely envelops a space.
“Handmade in Brooklyn. The candle’s natural wax blend provides a clean, slow burn that lasts up to 60 hours. In addition, our candles have such a clean burn, that the glasses are reusable. We use ours as stylish drinking glasses at home and the office.”
So, based on a 79 percent 4- to 5-star approval rating from Amazon, we give Tobacco an unequivocal 5.0 rating. There were no negative reviews we could find. (A few on Amazon actually refer to another product).
Other features.
- “Intoxicating candle is inspired by the botanical and medicinal properties of traditional apothecary origin
- “Features our blend of beeswax, vegetable and soy waxes
- “Smooth, smoky aroma and entheogenic experience.”
(Sorry for the big words — entheogenic derives from the Greek word entheogen. It literally means “generating the divine within.” Earlier, the phrase “ylang ylang” refers to an essential oil used in the candlemaking. The oil supposedly benefits heart health, mood, energy levels and more.)
